Same blog, new look!
Welcome to my blog’s new home on my Squarespace site. You can still find all my old posts—ten years’ worth!—here: mollyelkindtalkingtextiles.blogspot.com
The colorful flags hanging over this Oaxaca City street were seen in several places in the central city area.
I had the great pleasure last week of visiting Oaxaca, Mexico and the well-known weaving village Teotitlan del Valle. I joined a group organized by Ace Camps on a trip that was focused on looking at and doing crafts, and it was great. We enjoyed an embroidery workshop, a block-printing workshop, a hot chocolate-making experience, and visited the studios and workshops of a number of traditional artists. There was some shopping.
Depending on your device, you may be able to click each image to make it larger and hover your mouse to the bottom of the image for a caption. Or not. Apologies—I am still working out the bugs on this new platform! Thanks for your patience.
Oaxacan food is renowned for its use of fresh ingredients and complex layered flavors. I usually don’t post pics of food but I have to make an exception here!
The Sunday market in the village of Tlacolula is also a great place to buy good food and every other item you can think of.
Finally, we visited the Zapotec ruins at Monte Alban. This center of political and religious power flourished for hundreds of years from about 200 BCE to the late 8th century CE.
When I reflect on the trip, these words keep coming to mind: Joy. Color. Pattern. Craftsmanship. As I return to studio work I will hold tight to these ideas.
Thanks for allowing me to share slides from my vacation! I hope the next months hold inspiring adventures for you as well, whether far-flung or close to home.
